To fulfill their father’s final wish, two young sisters visit his grave on his birthday, dressed in their best outfits to show him. When they arrive, they’re surprised to find two beautifully wrapped boxes with their names on them, each holding a special message.
Isla, 6, and Madison, 8, missed their dad, Brian, deeply. Since he passed away, they hadn’t snuck cookies from the kitchen, teamed up to prank their mom, or gone shopping like they used to. These fun moments weren’t the same without him.
“Brian, you’re spoiling those girls!” his wife, Linda, used to say with a laugh. “Are you two ganging up on me? I know you’re sneaking them treats from the pantry!”
“Well, I’ll spoil them forever,” Brian would say with a grin. “As long as I’m here, my girls will always come first. Sorry, honey, but they’re my little competition,” he’d say, before wrapping Linda in a warm hug.
Brian had a special way of keeping their family balanced and happy. But after his battle with cancer took him away, their home became quieter. Isla and Madison grew more reserved, and Linda found herself struggling with her own grief, replaying the difficult memories of Brian’s illness and his final days.
When Brian’s health began to decline rapidly, Linda and the girls spent a last night together by his side in the hospital. Brian, knowing his time was short, asked Linda to leave the girls with him overnight. When he passed early the next morning, Linda felt the devastating weight of losing him, yet she could see the strength her daughters had as they faced the farewell.
Linda was still trying to come to terms with his absence when she overheard Isla saying, “Daddy wanted us to look pretty on his birthday. I want to wear red—he loved it when I wore red.” Madison chimed in, “Mom, Daddy asked us to visit him looking our best. Can we do this for him?”
Tears welled up in Linda’s eyes. She hadn’t realized how important this would be for them, but hearing their earnest request gave her the courage to fulfill Brian’s wish. So, they went shopping, picking out the prettiest dresses to honor him.
On Brian’s birthday, Isla and Madison held hands, dressed in their new outfits, and walked to his grave with Linda following close behind. When they reached his gravestone, they noticed two beautifully wrapped boxes with their names on them. “Mommy, look!” Isla gasped. “Daddy sent us gifts! But he’s so silly—it’s his birthday; we’re supposed to bring him gifts!”
Madison, more aware of what had really happened, gave Linda a knowing look. Linda smiled and urged them to open the boxes. Inside, each girl found a delicate pair of Mary Jane shoes in their favorite colors and a letter from Brian.
As they held their gifts, Linda read the heartfelt message to them:
“My beautiful girls,
Everyone here in heaven says they’ve never seen such beautiful little angels! I can see how lovely you look today. I wanted to make my girls feel extra special, so I got you these shoes. I hope you love them.
Even though I’m far away, I’ll always be right here in your hearts. I know you’re missing me, but that doesn’t mean we won’t still have fun. Go ahead and sneak those cookies now and then—just don’t tell Mommy! I want you to laugh, play, and be a little mischievous. Thank you for visiting me and dressing up for my birthday.
I love you forever,
Daddy.”
Little Isla beamed and hugged her new shoes, while Madison shed a tear for the first time since her father’s passing. She wrapped her arms around Linda, whispering, “Thank you, Mom, for helping us come here.”
Linda, touched by their strength and love, realized that even though Brian was gone, he was still a part of their lives, living in their hearts and memories. Their visit marked the beginning of healing for all three of them.
